Exam formats explained

Which SQE format does your sitting use?

The SQE1 format changes from January 2027. Your practice should match the sitting you are actually taking, so every mock on UK SQE Course follows the rules of your target sitting and tells you which format it simulates.

SQE1: 2026 and 2027 formats compared

SQE1 has two Functioning Legal Knowledge assessments (FLK1 and FLK2). Each is taken in sessions of single-best-answer questions.

What changes

  • Questions per FLK assessment: 180 → 170 (360 → 340 across FLK1 and FLK2).
  • Questions per session: 90 → 85.
  • Time per session: 2h 33m → 2h 24m. The average time per question stays about the same, so your pacing practice still applies.
  • Our mocks show the format label (for example “January 2027 format (170 questions per FLK)”) before you start, and a mock you have started keeps the rules it began with.
